Guinan's knowledge of non-linear time

In many episodes, Guinan seems to have knowledge that extends beyond linear time, leading some to speculate that her race has some kind of supernatural senses.

But my theory is that El-Aurians have NO supernatural powers, aside from long life spans.

Evidence:

1. Guinan visited Earth in 1900, met a time travelling Picard for the first time (his third time), they spent hours trapped in a cave talking about the future, and he saved her life.

2. In 2300, Guinan was briefly trapped in The Nexus, where she met Picard for the second time (his fourth time) and Kirk for the first time. She had a talk with Picard, whom she already knew, about non-linear time and stopping Soran.

3. Guinan was rescued from The Nexus by the Enterprise-B and Captain Kirk, who later was trapped in the Nexus, where he met both Guinan and Picard for the first time.

4. In the Twenty-fourth Century, Picard would meet Guinan for the first time (her third meeting with him) and they would somehow become friends, probably an odd relationship because she had known him for centuries, but he had never met her before.

5. Later, Picard's old pal Guinan joins the Enterprise-D as a bartender, where she mentions her past encounters with Q and her long friendship with Picard.

6. In "Yesterday's Enterprise," Guinan's intimate familiarity with Picard, and knowledge of non-linear time from her experiences with Kirk and Picard in the Nexus, enable her to realize that the current timeline has been corrupted by the arrival of the Enterprise-C, since Picard and historical events are playing out differently from how they were on her previous meetings with Picard in the past. The Enterprise-D crew assumes she has some innate ability to sense time, not yet realizing that she has been in The Nexus and has already met an alternate Picard and Data centuries earlier -- who were clearly not from this Enterprise-C timeline.

7. In "The Best of Both Worlds," Guinan says her relationship with Picard goes beyond friendship and family -- indeed, their relationship is beyond chronological time, as we would later see.

8. In "Time's Arrow" Picard travels back in time to 1900, where he meets Guinan for his third time (her first time) and only then begins to realize how their relationship started.

9. In "Generations," Guinan knows Soran would do anything to get back to the Nexus (obviously, since she already talked with Picard about it in the Nexus a century earlier -- she was just repeating back to Picard what Picard had told her a century ago).

10. Picard and Soran enter The Nexus, where Picard meets Guinan for his fourth time (her second time), and tells her that Soran would do anything to reach The Nexus, and Guinan introduces him to Captain Kirk for the first time.

11. Picard and Kirk leave The Nexus, Soran and Kirk die, and Picard presumably meets Guinan again on the crashed Enterprise-D, the fifth time for both of them; their relationship has finally come full-circle -- they have both now known each other for the same amount of time for the first time in their relationship.

12. Soran never left The Nexus, and would later become the arch-nemesis of Jonathan Archer known as FutureGuy.

(OK, I made up 12., but the rest are all described in actual episodes.)


So, as you can see, Guinan or other El-Aurians do NOT have any special powers or perceptive abilities. Guinan's insight into non-linear time is not an ability, it is knowledge learned from her first-hand experience with time paradoxes over the centuries. (If Picard had lived for 500 years, he would have the same insights into time as Guinan, since they have both had the same experiences.)

So, while in Guinan's early appearances on TNG her knowledge of Picard and time seemed strange and mysterious, if you look at all her appearances from subsequent episodes in chronological order, then you will see that everything makes sense after all, almost as if the producers had her whole story planned years in advance (I know, that's crazy talk for Trek, but all Guinan's bizarre time travel episodes actually make logical sense if you look at them all in order -- no supernatural "senses" are required).

That is a good argument, but there are things you missed. Guinan didn't actually meet Picard in the Nexus. She represented a part of him still attached to the outside of the Nexus.

Another thing is "Yesterday's Enterprise". In this episode everything changed. That means the entire past and future did. Which would mean that if Guinan had no knowledge or extra-linear powers, she would have changed too. Her past meetings with Picard would have been different. The Stargazer (if Picard had even commanded it in that timeline) would have been a war vessel too, and Picard's meeting with Guinan would have been different. That Picard was different. Yet Guinan knew that things were "wrong". If she had lived her entire life in that universe, why would things be wrong? When she met Picard in 1893, things would have been different as well. Had the Enterprise-D survived the onslaught of the Klingons with the Enterprise-C, and made it to the caves at Devidia II, when the crew traveled to the past, they too would be different. So the events of Guinan's first meeting with Picard could have happened differently. So why would Guinan think everything was "just wrong"? All her events would have had to have happened differently to her. So logically, Guinan would have to have some sort of power to know how things were "different".

Im going to say why I believe she HAD perception of the future.

Lets organize the thought and go by case scenario.

I'm going to list the order everything it would appear to guinan:

1) Guinan meets picard FROM the future in the 1800's. (EP WHERE DATA GETS SUCKED BACK INTO TIME).
2) Guinan is sucked into the Nexus in Generations and is divided like pulling apart a copy to make 2 while the Enterprise-B rescues one. Guinan explains this in the movie. "I am both here and there" she says.
3) The Rescude Guinan completes her part of the full circle and allows Picard to meet her. As Picard explained.
4) Guinan Joins the Enterprise-D and she shows her unusual abilities by frightening Q who says she is dangerous. (I only wish we found out why).
5) When a wormhole brings the Enterprise-C into the future, she shows a slight knolledge of what time was supposed to be and convinces Picard that the ship HAS to go back. Most Notably, the Tasha Yar from that timeline goes back with the Enterprise-C.
6) Later, when Tasha's Yar's daughter comes in a 2 part ep, Guinan shows knolledge of another timeline and is able to express that Picard in a WHOLE different timeline that he gave the OK for Tasha to go back on that ship. This was the ep where the Enterprise set up a dragnet along the Kingon Romulan Nuetral Zone to STOP incoming supplies with the Klingons.
7) When Data's head is found she used her knolledge to express Picard to go on the away mission to find Data. Thus using knolledge to complete full circle.
8) In Generations she expresses that Soran maybe still obsessed with returning to the Nexus.

In the end I think some is knolledge, but others she was actually using some mental powers we do not understand.

I wish she used them more.

You might have to read it a couple of times. But you have to understand it from Guinan's veiw. not movie format to understand what there taling about.
