Last year got the DVDs of all seasons of STNG and haver enjoyed going through them in a leisurely way. One thing I've noticed is that a planet or system is rarely simply a name, but almost always followed by a number. e.g not "Barkon" but "Barkon IV." Does anyone know why the writers chose to do this in almost every case? Thanks Dio

Thanks Dio There refuring to the fallowing: Barkon is the name of a Solar system and the number in roman form is in which from the sun the planet is. Example the one next to the sun which is only a few thousand kilometers from it is likely to be a desert planet, very hot and not the best location to settle. Say it is the Barkon system and sense its closest to the sun, it is Barken I. In your case the planet is Barken IV, so it is Barken 4. The 4th planet from the sun. Also, note that the designation stays the same even if a planet closer gets destroyed. So while Barken IV was left to be the new 3rd because Barken III got destroyed from some devistating peace of destruction, they may rename the planet if the inhabints wish to Barkon III or they may keep Barkon IV because it is long lived tradition. But yet the scientists may argue we must call it Barkon III do to the new position... But for the most part in ifs a empty system the Federation is classifying. They will just note that Barkon III in this case was destroyed and keep the name Barkon IV. So some of it is politics and generally it just labels the number of the planet. However some like us in the Earth solar system may give the planets seperate names. Like Earth is Earth. Mars is Mars. Or they may call the system Barkon System but give the planet another name like Fries but note its number. So now we got this: We live on the planet Fries IV in the Barkon system which is now in the 3rd position, but we call it Fries IV because it is a long tradition. Weird?
