SUPPORT THE GENE RODDENBERRY MEMORIAL HIGHWAY
As everyone reading this knows, on August 19, 1921, Eugene Wesley Roddenberry, known to billions world-wide as GENE RODDENBERRY, was born in El Paso, Texas.
Recently, on October 4, 2002, the El Paso Independent School District dedicated its Planetarium to the late Gene Roddenberry, an action is that way overdue (and ten years in the making once the idea was even presented). In conjunction with the dedication, a local fan proposed that City Council to pass a Proclamation declaring October 4, 2002, and every October 4 hereafter "Gene Roddenberry Day". The Proclamation came to be! Rod Roddenberry attended the dedication of the Planetarium, and while in town, was able to see the property where his dad was born.
Now there is proposed State legislation to name that portion of Interstate 10, from the easternmost point to the westernmost point of the city limits of El Paso the "Gene Roddenberry Memorial Highway". There is a deadline of March 1, 2003 to show support for this legislation so that Texas State Representative Joe Pickett can get it introduced in time for this legislative session.
There is a web site dedicated to this effort: www.geocities.com/grmhpetition
Please go there for the full story, pictures, and lots of other information. There is a page with all the local elected officials listed for everyone to e-mail directly (which would be MOST HELPFUL); however, the following are the main people to make sure they know how you feel about this project.
Texas State Representative Joe Pickett
